This paper describes the sources for establishment, as well as the very beginnings of an internationally unique specialized institution which focuses on the documentation of the culture and history of the Roma as a world ethnic group. It describes the establishment of the Museum of Romani Culture in 1991 as a non-governmental organization, its development as a memorial institute which builds its activities on quality collections.
